2012 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter ReviewThe 2011 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter lineup expands with the addition of a Crew Van model. All models of this full-size van use a 188-horsepower 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 engine. It pairs with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Three versions are offered: 2500, 2500 cargo extended, and 3500.

Walkaround
The 2500 is available in Passenger Van configurations with a Standard or High Roof. Cargo 2500 and 3500 versions are available with either roof as well. They also offer 144- and 170-inch wheelbases. The High Roof adds 11 inches of interior room. The new-for-2012 Crew Van model seats 5 passengers with room for cargo behind the rear bench seat. Passenger models seat up to 12 and MiniBus models seat up to 16 on rear bench seats. Safety features include ABS, traction control, antiskid system, front-side airbags, and curtain-side airbags.

Summary
Optional equipment includes a heated windshield with rain-sensing wipers, sunroof, front- and rear-obstacle detection, a wireless cell-phone link, and rearview camera. Note that Sprinter vans are also sold by Freightliner dealers under that brand's name.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Class Review
Designed as a replacement for the aging McLaren SLR and as a new range-topper for Mercedes-Benz, the SLS AMG is a completely new platform designed and honed by the high-performance gurus at AMG. Using the 300SL Gullwing as inspiration gave the car its characteristic shape, and perhaps its most unique and iconic feature--gull-wing doors. It features a long hood and short rear deck, much like the 300SL. Performance has been ramped up considerably, both in terms of raw power and chassis design.

Walkaround
The only available engine in the SLS AMG is the same 6.2L V8 used in the SL63 and other AMG models, although here it's been tuned slightly with dry-sump oiling, a reworked valvetrain and camshaft design, special tubular headers, a free-flowing intake and an improved exhaust system. The result is 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, which pushes the SLS to 60 in just 3.7 seconds and gives a top speed of 197 mph.A 7-speed dual-clutch electronic transmission is the only available gearbox, featuring aluminum shift paddles mounted on either side of the steering wheel. The driver can select between several modes that offer shift quality tuned for both maximum performance and maximum efficiency--and several steps in between. Mounted in the rear and connected to the engine via a carbon-fiber driveshaft, it helps give a near-perfect weight balance of 47/53 front-to-rear.The chassis utilizes 4-wheel independent suspension with double-wishbone designs front and rear, and with the engine mounted low in the chassis (thanks to dry-sump oiling) and its rear-mounted transaxle, the SLS's center of gravity and overall balance helps provide exceptional handling characteristics. Massive disc brakes help bring the car from 60 mph to a stop in just under 100 feet.The SLS AMG started out as a coupe, but a new convertible is available in 2012. Both are built on a high-tech aluminum space frame. Standard safety equipment includes stability and traction control, antilock brakes, front, side, knee and curtain airbags for both driver and passenger and Mercedes' "mbrace" emergency telematics system. In the event of a rollover, the coupe's gull-wing doors separate from the car via pyrotechnic devices, allowing easy exit for both driver and passenger.The roadster SLS comes with a three-layer fabric top and conventional front-hinged doors instead of the coupe's gull-wings. While Mercedes did have to add additional bracing to keep the chassis rigid, they claim the roadster weighs the same as the coupe, but has a lower center of gravity, so handling will not be affected too much.

Summary
Standard equipment includes 19-inch front and 20-inch rear cast aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlamps with washers, auto-dimming and power-folding mirrors, a backup camera, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, heated seats with memory functions, dual-zone automatic climate control and a premium sound system with satellite radio and iPod connectivity. In addition, Mercedes COMMAND interface is also standard.Optional features many AMG performance parts, such as performance and adaptive suspension and carbon ceramic brakes. Outside, three types of unique alloy wheels and carbon fiber trim are also available. Inside, a leather and suede-wrapped steering wheel, and an 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system are optional add-ons.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Review
Mercedes-Benz has given its luxurious hardtop convertible, the SL-Class, a complete redesign for the latest model year. Reduced weight, new technology and significantly increased power make this grand tourer a significantly more capable and coddling machine than before.

Walkaround
SL stands for sport leicht in German, which translates to sporty lightweight in English. While the earliest SLs certainly lived up to this badging, the car became increasingly luxurious and heavy in later generations. But a new all-aluminum bodyshell, which Mercedes-Benz says is its first, significantly trims the droptops rolling mass and increases agility (although the SL still isnt a hard-core sports car). To trim weight even further, magnesium is used for some components, although the automaker did add some high-strength steel tubing into the A-pillars to enhance safety.

Summary
Overall, the SLs shell itself tips the scales at about 242 lbs. lighter than the outgoing model. Despite the decreased weight, the new SL is actually larger than its predecessor by about 2 inches in overall length and 2.2 inches in width. Stretched out over the increased dimensions is controversial new sheetmetal that seeks to blend Mercedes current and historical design language; the long hood/short rear deck proportions are in keeping with SL heritage, although the extra-large front grille and headlights seem slightly out of proportion to the overall design. The tall, upright nose is a concession to European pedestrian safety standards. The new cabin features an elegant, flowing dashboard design punctuated by circular air vents that originated on the SLS AMG Gullwing. Material quality is consistently top notch, from the French-stitched leather to the generous sweep of fine wood trim extends from the center console across the dashboard into the doors. The increased exterior size results in ample space inside, with 1.5 inches more shoulder room and 1.1 inches more elbow room than before. High-Tech Naturally, the SL comes fully loaded with high technology features designed to assist drivers at every turn of the wheel of press of a button. Mercedes Magic Sky Control arrives on the options list, bringing with it a panoramic transparent folding roof that can be dimmed at the switch of a button (a normal glass roof is standard). The roof itself is lighter and faster than before, deploying or stowing in less than 20 seconds. To make the most of the open-top experience, a new FrontBass audio system utilizes otherwise wasted space in the aluminum structure ahead of the passenger footwells to serve as resonating chambers for the subwoofers. This marks the first time that an audio system has been developed with the creation of the body itself, and it opens up space in the door panels. Meanwhile, Magic Vision Control integrates windshield washer fluid jets into the wiper arms. While thats not necessarily new technology, Mercedes-Benz says it has carefully engineered the wipers so that no excess fluid gets on the windshield or heaven forbid in the cabin. In addition, the wiper blades are heated for winter use. Finally, the SL also features Hands-Free Access, which lets drivers swipe their foot under the rear bumper to pop the trunk lid when their hands are full. Emphasizing Athleticism To some drivers, a cars most important technology is under the hood. The new SL doesnt disappoint in this area thanks to Mercedes new 4.7-liter, 429-horsepower V8, which employs direct injection to add power and save fuel. But the big figure here is torque, which stands at 516 lb-ft., or a 32 percent jump over the outgoing SL. The SL sprints to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, a 0.8 second improvement. A seven-speed automatic transmission with an eco start/stop function is standard. The new SL is available with two different suspension systems - Agility Control Suspension is fitted as standard, while the ABC (Active Body Control) suspension system is available as an option. Both suspension variants are combined with a new electromechanical Direct-Steer system featuring speed-sensitive power steering and a ratio that can be varied in accordance with steering wheel angle. This provides improved directional stability and safety when traveling at highway speeds, makes for a more agile dynamic character at medium velocities and also reduces the amount of steering effort required when parking and maneuvering at single-digit speeds. Standard and Optional Features As is to be expected for a car commanding a six-digit pricetag, the SL features a long list of standard equipment including leather upholstery, 12-way adjustable heated seats with pneumatic lumbar support and memory, hand-polished genuine wood trim, a 10-speaker harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround-sound system with Dolby Digital 5.1.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK Review
The SLK's long hood now seems even longer, thanks to an upright grille nearly identical to the one that leads the SLS down the road-a grille design similar to those found on many other vaunted Mercedes-Benz two- seaters of the last 50 years. You've already seen this face on the CLS, and Mercedes-Benz's design chief, Gorden Wagener, has decreed that it will spread across the lineup.New LED headlamps feature illuminated brows la the previous-gen BMW 5-series, and lead nicely into the crisp crown of the front fenders. Particularly with the optional Sport package, which adds a chunky, snowplow-like apron, the entire front is starkly angular, providing an interesting contrast to the curvy, sloping rear end- which also is emblazoned with LEDs. The retractable roof's center panel is available in three varieties: body-color metal, dark-tinted glass, or the variable-tint "Magic Sky Control" glass. Sadly, the 2012 SLK is the latest vehicle to join the superfluous-fender-vent club.

Walkaround
If you've never had the pleasure of folding yourself into an SLS AMG, the new SLK's interior gives you a pretty good idea of what it looks like. The dashboard layout is virtually identical to that of the SLS, with a center-mounted screen set between crosshair-style air vents. As in the AMG car, the dash forms a simple, straight line spanning the cabin, breaking only for the twin-pod instrument cluster. Also evocative of the SLS are the flat- bottomed steering wheel and the arrangement of the center-stack controls on a rectilinear panel that sweeps down and rearward between the seats.Mercedes promises a tranquil interior at speed thanks to its new "Airguide." Instead of a conventional wind blocker, Airguide consists of clear triangular panels hinged on the inboard post of each roll bar. And, of course, the SLK's innovative Airscarf-which blows hot air from ducts in the base of the headrests onto the occupants' necks-returns for duty.

Summary
Come early 2012, the SLK250 will hit U.S. shores, powered by a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine similar to the one in the upcoming C250 sedan. With 201 hp and 229 lb-ft of torque, Mercedes says the four-banger is potent enough to hustle the little roadster to 60 in 6.5 seconds while returning combined fuel economy of 27 mpg. Even better, it will offer the choice of seven-speed automatic or six- speed stick. At some point, of course, AMG will release its take on the new SLK. As we previously reported, that car will be powered by a naturally aspirated version of AMG's new 5.5-liter V-8 pushing perhaps 400 hp.

2012 Mercedes-Benz SL Class Review
The next Mercedes-Benz SL, codenamed R231, is new from bottom to top. Loosely based on the rear-wheel drive components set of the E-class, the hardtop-coupe gets a longer wheelbase to facilitate entry and egress for a graying customer base. There's also more room for passengers and luggage. Inside, we find a more user-friendly cockpit with better ergonomics, extended memory functions and new seats developed and built together with BMW.

Walkaround
To keep those aging drivers comfortable even when traversing rough pavement, the new SL will employ a new active suspension named Magic Ride Control. An evolution of the Active Body Control seen on the current SL, Magic Ride Control employs a camera that scans the road for potholes and other irregularities. The findings are relayed to a computer, which can then respond within fractions of a second and with an accuracy of one millimeter. The advanced road reader looks sixty-five feet ahead and remains fully active up to a speed of 60 mph when it gradually gives way to a tauter fixed setting.As before, the SL will feature a retractable hardtop. This time around, it can be fitted with a variable-tint glass roof named Magic Sky Control. Up front, the L-shaped headlamps give way to more conventional rectangular lights, and the wideband grille will be positioned more upright for superior pedestrian protection. The rear end is dominated by extra-large wraparound taillights inspired by those on the CLS coupe.

Summary
Under the hood, the SL sticks to a gas engine-only line-up. The range starts with a 305 hp, 3.5-liter V-6. One step up is the 435-hp SL500 equipped with a twin-turbo 4.6-liter V-8. Then there's the pair of AMG variants. Like the S63 and CL63 AMG cars, the SL63 AMG will shed its 6.2-liter V-8 in favor of an even more potent 5.5-liter bi-turbo model good for 565 hp. The mighty 6.0-liter V-12 survives in the SL65 AMG, and will see its output bumped to 630 hp, and will finally be paired with a seven-speed automatic in place of the beefy old five-speed. At the same time, the other SLs will eventually trade up from a seven-speed unit to an even more efficient nine-speeder with integrated hybrid technology. If the dual clutch transmission used on the SLS trickles down to the new SL, it will reserved for the AMG variants.

2012 Mercedes-Benz S Class Review
Once again, Mercedes revised their engine options on the S-Class. A new 3.0L BlueTEC V6 becomes available and the S550 receives a smaller-displacement, but more powerful twin-turbo 4.6L V8 over last year's 5.5L V8.The new kid on the block is the S350 BlueTEC turbodiesel, a 3.0L V6 that makes 240 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque. The S400 hybrid continues with a mild hybrid using a 3.5L V6 with 295 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque and a mild hybrid system to assist the gasoline engine for 30 percent better fuel economy than the S550.

Walkaround
The S550 gets a new 4.6L twin-turbo V8 engine, which makes 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Surprisingly, it's still capable of 25 mpg on the highway. The V12-powered S600 keeps its 5.5L V8, which makes 510 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque.At the top end, the S63 AMG gets a twin-turbo 5.5L V8 that makes 536 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. It utilizes stop-start technology and a 7-speed transmission to keep fuel use relatively reasonable. The S65 AMG continues to utilize its 6.0L V12 engine, which this year makes 624 hp and an astonishing 738 lb-ft of torque.Across the board, the S-Class carries some amazing technology. All S-Class features Airmatic active suspension with adaptive damping. Also standard are bi-xenon headlamps with adaptive corning lights and rain-sensing wipers with heated washers. High-tech options include a SPLITVIEW entertainment system allows both front seat occupants to watch different programs on the same LCD display, a night-vision system includes a pedestrian protection system and an innovative automatic 4-zone climate control uses dust and pollen filters as well as dew point and seatbelt sensors.

Summary
Other safety-oriented options include Active Lane Keeping Assist and Active Blind Spot Assist, both of which can trigger automatic brake intervention. Attention Assist detects drowsy drivers and is standard on all but the hybrid, and the standard Adaptive High Beam Assist monitors approaching headlights and dims its own to avoid blinding oncoming drivers.

The R-Class comes in two trims: the R350 4MATIC and the R350 BlueTEC turbo-diesel. The R350 4MATIC comes with a 3.5L V6 gasoline engine offering 302 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. Mileage for this engine is estimated at 15 mpg city and 19 mpg highway. The R350 BlueTEC diesel features a 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel engine that makes 210 horsepower and an astounding 400 pound-feet of torque. Mileage for the BlueTEC is estimated at 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway. Both engines come connected to a standard 7-speed automatic transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. The suspension features a double wishbone setup in front and 4-arm multilink in rear.Comfortable seating for six is standard on the R-Class and a 7-passenger configuration is optional. There are up to 40 inches of space between the first two rows and up to 30 inches between the second and third rows.Standard equipment includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 19-inch aluminum wheels, power sunroof, performance tires, bucket seats, power driver's seat, fog lamps, privacy glass, anti-theft system, brown maple woodgrain interior trim, trip computer, wireless cell phone hookup and interior cargo shade. WALKAROUND
A full range of safety features come standard on the R-Class, including 4-wheel vented anti-lock disc brakes, side airbags for the first and second rows, side-curtain bags for all three rows, electronic stability control with rollover sensors, an advanced tire pressure monitoring system and a trailer stability assist feature. The R-Class also comes with the Mercedes 'Pre-Safe' system standard, which tightens seat belts, adjusts seats and prepares the vehicle to be more flexible' in the event of an impending accident. Mercedes 'Post-Safe' system is also standard, which unlocks the doors and shuts off the engine and fuel system after an accident.

SUMMARY
Available options include a navigation system, a high-end Harmon/Kardon surround sound system, satellite radio, mirror memory, rear parking aid, rear-seat entertainment system, power liftgate, backup camera, keyless remote start, high-definition radio, power folding mirrors, hard disk drive, panoramic roof and heated seats.

2012 Mercedes-Benz ML Class Review
Midsize luxury crossover SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz M-Class have always been good at carrying your stuff, but nobody expects to make time on back roads. Thanks to more powerful V6 engines and an improved automatic transmission, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 and the diesel ML350 Bluetec hustle quite nicely. It's their improved mileage figures that make them good companions out there.

Walkaround
Crisp, new sheet metal is stretched over the same 114.8-inch wheelbase as last year's model, although the redesigned SUV's track is over an inch wider. The 2012 ML350 is nearly an inch longer overall (189.1) while its height has come down nearly an inch (70.7). Although published legroom and cargo capacity have dipped slightly from the second generation, there's still ample knee clearance for 6-footers in the second row and, for the first time ever, you can recline the rear seatbacks. The 36.2-cubic-foot cargo bay is deep for this class, with space enough for two weeks' worth of groceries for a family of four. The 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 tester gets the same direct-injected, gasoline 3.5-liter V6 thats in the 2012 C-Class Coupe and sedan. Power ratings don't change on the M-Class, so we're still talking about 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 pound-feet of torque from 3,500-5,250 rpm. This is on par with the Acura MDX, but still shy of the 300 lb-ft of torque on the BMW X5.With a base price of $51,356, a diesel-powered 2012 ML350 Bluetec, equipped with the same seven-speed automatic and 4Matic system, costs just $1,500 more than our gasoline ML350. It gets to 60 mph in the same 7.3 seconds, says Mercedes, but is expected to earn a 20 city/25 highway mpg rating (versus 18/25 in 2011).

Summary
Of course, there's no shortage of tech features to add to the 2012 Mercedes-Benz ML350 and ML350 Bluetec, including a hard-drive-based navigation system, all-speed adaptive cruise control, a self-parking system and even accessory iPad docking stations for the backseat. No surprise, then, that our ML350 lands well past $60,000.

Although this compact size SUV is the smallest one Mercedes offers, at the same time it actually provides decent room, sporty ride, safety, good looks and fuel economy at very affordable prices. 4Matic version also demonstrated very impressive off-road capabilities. Previous 2011 GLK models have been very successful in sales and fairly trouble free. In some of the 2011 models, Mercedes-Benz introduced the new color: Diamond White and it immediately became the hottest and best- selling color. It is somewhere in the middle of Arctic White and Pearl White with the extra metallic layer. Actually it looks a bit different in the light and in the shade, so you have to see it in person. The good news: Diamond White is available on 2012 GLK! The bad news: you have to pay for it an additional $1,515. It replaced the unpopular Barolo Red. Also, another new color Lunar Blue replaces the similar Capri Blue and new Sapphire Grey replaces the Jade Green. Cuprite Brown color, previously available as special order only, is now available as a regular option.

2012 Mercedes-Benz GL Class Review
The GL class came to be in 2007 in the form of the GL450, and was based on the decades-old squared-off G-class SUV. The GL retains much of the off-road capabilities of the military-style G-wagon, but adds third-row seating, more creature comforts, and 500 more pounds of towing capability. The GL class has grown from one model to three, including an ultra-luxury edition and a low-emissions diesel. Mercedes' BlueTEC 3.0L V6 diesel engine puts out 210 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The BlueTEC achieves 50-state emissions certification by cleaning the diesel emissions at the rear of the car using a combination of particulate filters and a urea additive Mercedes calls "AdBlue."

Walkaround
The GL450 has a 4.6L V8 making 335 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. The GL550 features a 5.5L V8 that produces 382 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. All three models have a 7-speed automatic transmission, full -time 4-wheel drive, electronic brake assist, adaptive variable suspension, stability control, traction control, tire pressure monitoring and automatic load leveling. Many of the features that are standard on the GL550 are options on the two other variants, such as leather seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, navigation system and electronic parking aid. 2012 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class Review
The second-generation CLS, which goes on sale here early next summer as a 2012 model, isn't as pretty as the first one. The new body is a mixture of unimpeachable proportions and jarring design details. The overall envelope is elegant, but Mercedes embroiders it with brash details such as aggressive air scoops around the front bumper and sharp creases along the flanks. As with virtually every car that comes to market these days, the CLS is bigger than the vehicle it replaces. The wheelbase has grown from 112.4 inches to 113.2, and the overall length is now 194.5 inches, up from 193.6. The car is slightly taller and wider, at 55.8 and 74.1 inches, respectively. The running gear comes from the new E-class sedan, but the CLS has a slightly wider track in front and back.

Walkaround
Although it's still a striking car, the CLS places equal emphasis on its bevy of safety features. There are nine standard airbags and no fewer than 12 assistance systems. New among these are three active systems to help with parking, staying in the appropriate lane, and monitoring blind spots. The latter doesn't merely alert a driver to a car in a blind spot; it uses the brakes to tug the CLS away from an approaching vehicle. More important to enthusiasts, Mercedes is using its new 4.7-liter, direct-injection twin-turbo V-8 in place of a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter engine. (It seems that Mercedes' naming conventions have followed BMW's lead, in that they tell you absolutely nothing about what's underhood.) This engine made its debut in the CL550, where it was rated at 429 horsepower. In the CLS, the power is down to 402, although thats still 20 more horses than in the previous CLS550. The old engine made 391 pound-feet of torque, which grows here to 443, available from 1600 rpm. Mercedes claims the twin-turbo engine is 10 to 15 percent more fuel efficient, thanks to the smaller displacement, direct injection, and a stop-start system that will not come to the U.S. on this engine, instead waiting to appear on the upcoming AMG model. The engine is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive will be available later. Performance should remain similar to that of the previous model; the last CLS550 we tested managed the 0-to-60-mph sprint in 4.7 seconds. But by the middle of next year when the car launches here, it is likely that Mercedes also will introduce the CLS63 with a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 making about 550 horsepower.

Summary
Compared with the previous model, the new CLS interior provides a little more shoulder room (up by 0.9 and 0.5 inch, front and rear), thanks to slimmer door trim. The interior quality is also better, with actual metal rather than plastic on some of the switches, real wood panels, and gorgeous, thick leather. 2012 BMW Z4 Review
The Z4 is now offered in three different models: the Z4 sDrive28i, which comes with a 255-horsepower, 2.0L 4-cylinder engine; the Z4 sDrive35i, powered by a 300-hp, 3.0L turbocharged six; and the sDrive35is, which gets a high-performance 335-hp turbo six. Each of these powertrains delivers satisfying performance with the standard 6-speed manual transmission-including a linkage that's still among the best in the business-but the 7-speed dual-clutch (DCT) gearbox in the sDrive35i is a significant step above the 6-speed automatic that's offered in the base model. The DCT shifts very quickly, matches revs for downshifts, and does a great job of maintaining a smooth flow of power. Acceleration from zero to 60 mph happens in just 5.0 seconds with the DCT, while top speed with the available Sport Package is 150 mph.

Walkaround
All three engines in the Z4 come with variable valve control and develop plenty of torque at low revs; but the turbocharged engine in the sDrive35i is surprisingly strong. Adaptive M Suspension, available on all three Z4s, enables the best of all worlds, with improved ride quality plus tight body control when needed. All Z4 models come with Driving Dynamics Control, which lets you choose between Normal, Sport, or Sport+ modes-each dialing in different settings for the stability control system, throttle response, transmission behavior and even steering. In Z4s equipped with the Adaptive M suspension, it controls firmness, too. The Z4 doesn't make the safety sacrifices that many soft-top roadsters do; it has a stiff passenger cell and a full roster of airbags, including head and thorax bags that deploy from the seat backrests. Comfort isn't usually expected in a roadster, but the Z4 has plenty of it. The 2-seater comes with firm, supportive seats and has a surprising amount of legroom. The available leather is treated with sub-reflective technology that helps keep the interior cool on a hot day. Wind buffeting is reasonable enough at highway speeds to maintain a conversation with the top down, and with the top up it's nearly as quiet inside as a true coupe. The 2-piece top, made of aluminum, opens or closes in just about 20 seconds. Trunk space becomes a bit smaller with the top down, but with it up the trunk has space for two golf bags, according to BMW.

Fourth-generation BMW's iDrive interface includes a vibrant new 8.8-inch wide-screen display, plus new menu structure, including helpful symbols, and the iDrive controller is now flanked with hot buttons for several common functions.
